LA ESCUELA

The Escuela de Violeros de Zaragoza is an initiative of Muslyramus, sponsored by the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation and by the Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza, among many other public and private entities.

Its main objective is to provide tuition on the craft of string instruments. During the academic year 2015-2016, the speciality of guitar making will be offered.

It is a pedagogical innovation project focused on providing violeros and guitar makers with quality training by following old crafting procedures.

This is a pioneer project open to society created with the intention of profiting from the incredibly rich Spanish musical heritage.

ENSEÑANZAS DE VIOLERÍA Y GUITARRERÍA

THE NEED TO PROMOTE THE TEACHINGS OF VIOLERÍA AND GUITAR MAKING.

The interest in the Spanish musical heritage is huge and has been recognised by musicology and organology experts from all around the world.

The contribution made by Spanish violeros and guitar makers have played a key role in the creation and subsequent development of several instrument types. Unfortunately, this situation will only be beneficial if restoration craftsmen are trained.

There will be two specialities: violería (making of Gothic, Renaissance and baroque string instruments of Spanish origin, using old crafting procedures and techniques); and guitar making (of artistic quality Spanish guitars).

The need for the support towards these specialties was already heartily encouraged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by musicologists such as Barbieri and Anglés in order to create a basic cultural asset. Francisco Asenjó Barbieri was one of the first scholars interested in the profession of musical instrument making.

Asenjo was a passionate critic of the general disinterest towards instrument making in Spain. In response to the disdainful views of foreign scholars on this matter, he led a spirited defence of the Spanish culture. Asenjo eventually wrote an article in the Almanaque del Museo de la Industria addressing the work of Spanish instrument makers. In this manuscript, which addresses the work of Spanish instrument makers, Asenjo strongly advocates for the need of improvement in teaching the craft of instrument making. Instruments which he refers to as “purely artistic”.

Unfortunately, this referral did not have institutional feedback until 2011 when it was made official with Royal Decree 565/2011, dated 20th April. However, at this stage, no official school has been created, at risk of losing the learning old systems of the profession.

Thanks to the sponsorship provided by the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation, by the Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza and together with other public and private entities, the Escuela de Violeros de Zaragoza will try to make a significant contribution to fill this gap.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

TEACHINGS OF VIOLERIA IN ZARAGOZA AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 16TH CENTURY

At the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century, Zaragoza hosted numerous workshops of violeros. Reviewing the data we have, we are able to determine that during several decades, Zaragoza was the Spanish, and possibly European, city  with the highest number of violeros, both Christians and Mudejars, closely followed by the city of Toledo until the mid of the century, when crafting violeros came to be the most numerous than the ones in Zaragoza.

The Escuela de Violeros de Zaragoza was located in the same urban area as those workshops such as the ones of Moferriz, the Albariel, Miguel de Terradas, among others. It wants to convey the artistic spirit of those years, as a reflection of a remarkable cultural and musical activity in the city of Zaragoza.

Eadem die que Ybrahem Moferriz moro habitant en la ciudat de Çaragoça de grado ….afirma por moço con el honorable maestre Miguel Terradas musico habitant en la dicha ciudat por tiempo de dos anyos continuos e siguientes los quales enpezaran a correr el primero dia del mes de junio primero vinient endelant e con las condiciones siguientes. Primerament es condicion que el dicho maestre Miguel Terradas durant el dicho tiempo sea obligado tener sano y enfermo al dicho ybrahem e darle de comer y bever en como a moço se acostumbra dar. Item es condicion que durant el dicho tiempo el dicho Miguel Terradas sea obligado de mostrar al dicho Ybrahem de tanyer e encordar e hazer biguelas e otros qualesquiere instrumentos de musica quanto a el fuere posible demostrarselo. Item es condicion que el dicho maestre Miguel al fin del dicho tiempo de los dichos dos anyos haya e sea tenido de dar como por señor del presente se obliga a dar al dicho Ybrahem doscientos y cinquenta sueldos Jaqueses. Item es condicion que el dicho Ybrahem durant el dicho tiempo haya de trebajar todos dias ahunque sean domingos o dias de fiestas de cristianos sino seran viernes o dias de pascuas o fiestas de moros. Item es condicion que el dicho Ybrahem ante de cumplir el dicho tiempo se saldra de casa del dicho maestre Miguel sin su volundat que sea obligado a pagarle la despenssa de todo el tiempo que en su casa habra estado e assi con las dichas condiciones el dicho Ybrahem se firmo con el dicho maestre Miguel e el dicho maestre Miguel acepto el dicho moço con las dichas condiciones entre los dichos maestre Miguel e Ybrahem prometieron e se obligaron tener servar e cumplir las dichas condiciones respective. E cada uno a lo que es obligado la una part a la otra obligaron sus perssonas e todos sus bienes.
